There are three main aspects to dating: the purpose, guidelines, and results. First, the purpose is very important. The purpose in dating should be looking for a godly spouse. Dating should never be about seeing what you can get from a certain relationship with a person. This reveals a very self-centered individual who cares for no one but his or her own self. The purpose of dating is to have fun meeting new people and watching for someone who cares about God. One should never be focused on having an intimate relationship with someone they are dating. Dating should be innocent and not result in guilt over immorality. This then leads to the second aspect of dating: the guidelines. Guidelines should be put in place well before dating. Even if someone has always been known as the “good kid” and has never been known to do something harmful to another individual it is always safer to have some parameters set in place before going on a date. A few rules to set in place would be to first of all, always be with groups of people or have a chaperone of sorts nearby, second never be fully alone with an individual you are dating (especially if you know them very well), third do not fully focus your attentions on a certain person (this can lead to a relationship becoming more serious than it should be), fourth make sure that your parents are in approval of you meeting with the individual, and fifth make sure that the person you are dating is a Christian. It is essential that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the person you are dating is a Christian. The third aspect of dating is the result desired. The results of dating, such as marriage, should be God-honoring. The individuals should have an authentic love for each other that is biblical in its understanding. If it does not result in marriage there should be a healthy friendship between the two people. There should be nothing more and nothing less. Dating is a very unique time for each individual, but should be done with responsibility. If a person keeps God fully on his or her mind when meeting new people he will have a better chance of finding someone compatible for his own life in marriage.
